Samuel Beckett

What a guy. A true mensch. With his play Not I, Beckett manages to hold a mirror to the face of society and dare it to look into the mirror. When I read it I was unsure how to take it. It can be quite jarring; and that by design. When asked for advice to give the actor playing the main (and incidentally only) character, Beckett reportedly said something to the effect of, "The play is not designed to play on the audience's emotions or intellect. It's supposed to play off their nerves." Indeed it does. Check it out for yourself here. A word though, turn off all the lights. Get as close to true darkness as possible. You will be experiencing it in as close to the environment that Beckett wanted as is probably going to happen.
